Charges brought against students in childs suicide????

First, allow me to say I in no way condone the treatment this girl received from her schoolmates. Now, for our govt- local/ federal/ whatever.. To get involved and seek to bring charges against the students is A mistake. I do think school teachers as our 1st line of defense in these situations and need to receive training on what they should be looking for to spot and irradicate these situations in the future,I as A father of four girls, two in high school and two in grammer school. Have taught my children for sometime, that people are getting way to soft skinned in this country! There should be nothing someone can verbally do to you that will cause you to be upset. There should be nothing anyone can write about you that should cause you to be upset. Fact-some people are stupid, people will say things that are completely made up to try to upset you, if you let them succeed they will continue. remember this, they can Not physically hurt you with words. If you decide to hurt yourself because of something someone says, or any other reason, you have just made that bad day your last. They win!!! You will never have another good day again, remember what those are like?? If we are looking to cast blame on everyone, has anyone looked at the parents?? How did they not know the child was in such A bad place for such A long time?? Was she really the regular happy child at home or did the parents ALSO miss signs as the teachers did that this was leading to something bad??? Boy these countries and places that hate America must laugh at us, all they have to do is wait. We will destroy ourselves soon enough, take away freedom of speech what the hell....Think about it!!!

  1. Though I consider you a close and dear friend, I could not disagree more. Having followed this story closely, and having been involved in the anti-bullying legislation at the state level, I am of a different mindset - particularly with regard to what ought to be considered a typical part of a school day.

Glenn: the indictments against the teens brought by the DA included two counts of statutory rape. As the father of two daughters, I would find that hard to accept were my child to be the victim. Add to it the other stuff that was done to this girl, and you begin to get a clearer picture that she must have been tormented day in and day out. These actions far exceeded ‘bad things’ being said to or about her.

Fear and intimidation might be the norm on the battlefield and in warfare – but they have no place in the classroom. These ‘mean girls’ used these tactics as well as a more physical approach to beat down and overwhelm this poor girl. Sure – it’s important to have your kids believe that they are unique and precious. So, too is it critical to ensure they have the self esteem to stand up for themselves and for what’s right. Glenn - we have both discussed the difficulty of raising daughters and the need for us to instill in them self value and self confidence. Not every parent gets the significance of this – nor is every child is receptive to it. They are, after all, teenagers, right?.

What these kids did to the girl is reprehensible – and should be held as the standard for all to witness as the examples of how not to act and what not to do. And – I believe that they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law for many reasons – the least of which is to ensure that other kids have a reason to re-think their actions – because now those actions have clear and severe consequences.

  2. Joe-I am told the statutory rape charge as it applies to this case is not what you might think. I, first think of the Males assaulting and forcibly ripping the clothing from the girl and then forcing her to have sex. This picture absolutely does what its intended to do, Anger those who don't realize that as it pertains to this case, it is said all parties involved, although consentual, are minors. Thus not being capeable legally to have consentual sex. Thus the charge, much more like A DA throwing charges into A hostile situatiuon to see what will stick..I do not condone the behavior of these kids. I too am outraged,if these kids were threatening or physically hurting this child in any way surely we can prove it and charge them with assault. Now it is being reported some of the faculty was made aware of the situation and did nothing. That is reprehensible. I firmly believe we will see some sort of formal training for all of this states teachers and administrations of some sort of intervention techniques and policies. If it can be proven that teachers were aware and did nothing I would expect nothing less than finding whatever charges fit and charging them.I like the idea of anti bullying laws, however they need to be clear and specific, I don't think someone telling someone that the shirt they have on is ugly or that they are fat, should be considered bullying and punishable by law!! This is perhaps where you and I disagree, I think verbally you should be able to say just about, if not anything to someone. Obviously if you are using foul language you might get in trouble at school. And of course we should not forget that the person you may be talking to might kick the crap out of you..Now don't get confused I am not talking threats, if you are threatening someone this is where I feel the bullying law should apply.I just think we as parents need to remember, it all starts at home. If you are one of those all trusting, my kids got A computer and A wii in the bedroom and texts on the cell phone all the time and I trust my kid to make good decisions, I say you are setting that kid up for failure. It is our job to eleminate opportunities where our children might screw up, I know these kids can be in the same house as us these days and be somewhere completely different or with A whole bunch of different people just by texting or sitting on that computer. I don't know Joe but I am deeply concerned that the kid's as well as some of the parents don't know how to handle situations these day's, they look to the government to solve the problems that should be solved at home then bitch that the government has thier fingers into everything, we coddle our children so much these days that some day when we the parents arent there to hold the kids hand thru something they are going to figure out the world is A terribly cruel place at times and will not be prepared to handle it.
